Atlantic Sinfonia will be touring the Maritimes this Spring: The tour opens at 7:30 pm at the Capital Theatre in Moncton on March the 14th. On the 15th the show will take place 8pm as part of the Antigonish Performing Arts Series at the Immaculata Auditorium and conclude in Wolfville at 7:30 pm as part of the Acadia Performing Arts Series in the Festival theatre.
Show title: Mozart and Friends:
Synopsis: The performance is based on the music of Catherine the Great. While fostering the arts and education in Russia she drew upon the ideas of writers, musicians and artists of the enlightenment in the ‘the west’ including many of the major composers of the day. The program will include works of the enlightenment that may have been heard in Catherine’s court. The music presented is from the repertoire of the traditional wind octet with bass, also called a wind Harmonie. Groups such as this were part of courts throughout Europe in the late 1700s and even were found in North America in the emerging colonies.
Biography:
Atlantic Sinfonia Atlantique, a unique hybrid orchestra with an audience friendly approach to classical chamber music, brings together some of the best professional musicians from the Maritime region.
Under the artistic direction of Richard Hornsby and led by New Brunswick’s David Adams, as concertmaster, the group performs in 18th century style, standing and performing without conductor and often in non-traditional performance settings with fine acoustics. The resulting product is high quality entertainment – performed with freshness and vibrancy.
Atlantic Sinfonia is dedicated to introducing concert-goers to the great repertoire for small orchestra. Traditional pieces and crowd favorites are always on the program, but many will find they enjoy being introduced to new works as well. A close bond with the audience members and an entertaining educational component around the music being performed are always part of the show.
The Atlantic Sinfonia has been in existence for 9 years. Typically the ensemble mounts 3 concerts a season and does each in Fredericton and also sometimes tours the concert to other regions in the Maritimes. In the past three years the organization has made great efforts to bring classical ensemble music to a wider audience, developing special programs for kids, young professionals, and adults.
